The season for giving thanks is upon us, and as Christ followers we have much to thank God for. One way to offer God thanksgiving is to give generously to those who are in need. With a depressed economy, recent flooding, and other complications, our communities in and around Houston have great needs. Parkway has two different opportunities to demonstrate the love of Christ and serve these families this November. By partnering with Family Hope in Fulshear and Generation One in the Third Ward of Houston, we can work to build up those who are hurting in these communities.
Often these families who live in poverty do not just struggle with low-incomes, but they also are failed by the systems that are supposed to support them. School systems, health systems, legal systems, governmental systems, and even religious systems sometimes fail to help those very people that they were designed for. Generation One provides quality education for the preschool aged children in the Third Ward. They give them a good lunch and healthy snacks, as well as provide after school tutors for the older students. They build relationships with their students’ families, help guide them when they can, and they teach them about Jesus.
Family Hope in Fulshear is working to put together resources for the at-risk families in Fulshear, Simonton, north Richmond area, and even Brookshire. They are teaching the parents skills that will enable their children to have the attributes needed for life success. They provide fresh produce and a gift card for meat every month, and they oft
en have over 150 families come and receive their assistance. It is a growing ministry that has the goal of empowering the families in their community with the skills needed to thrive.
God calls His people to care for those who are struggling. Psalm 140:12 declares, “I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.” Jesus teaches His followers to feed the hungry and to provide for the vulnerable. In Matthew 25:40 He says, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Please consider joining one of these two opportunities this November, and let it be one way your family celebrates the season of Thanksgiving.
